Cast Iron Street Furniture Coatings, Coastal Environment

Project

Street furniture installed along coastal promenades faces some of the toughest conditions for protective coatings. Constant exposure to salt spray, moisture and UV radiation means long-term corrosion protection is essential to minimise maintenance and extend asset life.

When specifying a coating system for cast iron fence posts and decorative support columns, the project required a solution capable of achieving ISO 12944 C5 Very High performance in a demanding marine environment.

Coating System

RD Elastometal® & RD Monoguard SG

For heavily pitted or porous cast iron, RD Coatings recommends applying RD Elastometal® as a mist coat to penetrate and seal the surface before applying either additional Elastometal or RD Monoguard SG as the finish coat.

On smoother cast iron surfaces, Monoguard SG can be applied directly where appropriate.

Why It Was Chosen

  • Suitable for cast iron and steel substrates
  • Water-based coating technology
  • Excellent adhesion to difficult surfaces
  • Ideal for refurbishment projects
  • Proven corrosion protection in coastal environments

Project Outcome

Independent real-world performance data has demonstrated that RD Elastometal® can provide corrosion protection equivalent to ISO 12944 C5 Very High, making it a proven solution for exposed steel structures in aggressive marine environments. Combined with Monoguard SG where appropriate, the system offers a durable, environmentally conscious alternative to traditional solvent-based coatings.
