Elastomeric coatings for roofing and cladding.
Elastomeric water-based paints such as New Guard Coatings Group’s Guard ELC, RD Coatings Elastodeck and Rust-Oleum’s Noxyde+ are often considered the best option and the professional’s choice for coating roofing and cladding. For pitched and flat roofs, there is a solution for all, with both Guard ELC and Elastodeck available in all RAL and BS4800 shades.
Several Key Advantages are: –
Weather Resistance
Wide substrate tolerance
Flexibility
Durability and Warranty availability
Environmentally Friendly
Ease of application and maintenance
Problem Solving and added Benefits: –
Flat Roof sealing
Bituminous roof sealing
Crack Bridging
Energy Efficiency
Weather Resistance:
Elastomeric paints after full curing form a durable, waterproof membrane that helps protect roofing and cladding from moisture infiltration. This is crucial for preventing leaks, reducing the risk of water damage and protecting assets. They are also UV-resistant which prevents degradation from prolonged exposure to sunlight. This chemistry extends the life of the coating and maintains its protective qualities over time.
Wide substrate tolerance:
This type of coating can be used as a primer and a finishing coat on many roofing and cladding substrates including steel, iron, special alloys, metallised iron and steel, aluminium, weathered galvanized steel > 1 year old, copper, lead, zinc and more. All Elastomerics can be applied to these substrates on a pitched roof (>4% slope), with RD Coatings Elastodeck suitable for an even wider range of substrates.
Flexibility:
Elastomerics are highly flexible, allowing them to expand and contract with the underlying substrate. This amazing 200%+ flexibility is essential for roofing and cladding, which can experience significant structural movements and temperature fluctuations, particularly with darker roofs.
Durability and Warranty availability:
All of Guard ELC, Elastodeck and Noxyde+ have excellent adhesion properties with the recommended surface preparation, ensuring they bond well to various surfaces. Their thick consistency also provides good coverage, with the thickness applied determining the lifespan. Should the substrate have intricate areas like welds, nuts and bolt-heads, these can be easily covered by using a brush for these small areas. A simple two coat system can provide a 15- or 25-year warranty over pitched metallic based roofs, with a 3 coat system giving a 10 year life over porous tile and flat roofs. All are available upon request prior to commencement of project, where your New Guard Coatings Group Technical Sales Advisor will support you to achieve the requested warranty.
Environmentally Friendly:
Being water-based coatings, these paints have lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) compared to solvent-based equivalents. This makes them more environmentally friendly and safer for applicators and occupants alike. They are also lead, chromate and zinc free, a welcome health and safety benefit.
Ease of Application and Maintenance:
These single component coatings are easy to apply using standard painting equipment. Their maintenance is also straightforward; being water-based they can often be simply cleaned with water and a mild detergent and can be touched-ups by brush to create the protection of choice. Guard ELC, Elastodeck and Noxyde+ are all ‘Dry-fall’ products.
What does dry-fall mean?
This means that any over-spray coating created by the applicator turns to powder before it hits the floor. It can then be simply swept away upon completion at the end of the shift. This very effectively provides project peace of mind for surrounding property owners, their cars and vehicles etc. so no hefty bills from damaged/paint splattered surroundings!
Flat Roof and Bituminous Roof Sealing:
Flat roofs, where there can be pooling water for several days, requires an enhanced coating system. RD Coatings Elastodeck applied with RD Coatings Roof Fleece under the first layer offers protection for 10+ years with a multi-coat system. Elastodeck is also excellent for more challenging roof constructions, including old bituminous membranes (>1 year), EPDM, weathered PVC and porous tiles made of cement, fibre-cement and concrete.
Crack Bridging:
The high elasticity of elastomeric paints allows them to bridge small cracks and gaps in the roofing and cladding surfaces. This helps in maintaining the integrity of the protective barrier over time. For larger or unsightly cracks supporting fibre filler products such as RD Coatings Roof Fleece are available to be applied to the wet-surface between the two coats to provide seamless joints and tremendous protection. Should the applicator require an edging product, that’s equally not an issue and the use of products such as Rust-Oleum Noxyde tape can be easily applied for edge laps. Noxyde Tape is a self-adhesive tape made of a butyl rubber compound protected by a fleece in polypropylene to ensure an easy coverage of these uneven areas.
Energy Efficiency:
Some specialist elastomeric paints with optimised pigments have reflective properties that help reduce heat absorption. By reflecting the maximum amount of sunlight, these coatings can improve the energy efficiency in buildings and help lower cooling costs. By reducing cooling bills and the Carbon Footprint, these coatings are kind to the environment and can aid in creating a more acceptable working/storage environment. One such high solar reflective coating is the RD Coatings Sunguard, a fluoropolymer product with very high UV and excellent dirt pick-up resistance. One thin layer at 40µ dft applied by either airless-spray or roller gives a solar reflective index of over 110.
In summary, elastomeric water-based paints provide a combination of durability, flexibility, weather resistance, and environmental benefits, making them an excellent choice for your roofing and cladding projects.
