Protecting an iconic landmark at Yankee Stadium

Location: New York, USA Manufacturer: RD Coatings Coating used: RD-Elastometal Application: Lead paint encapsulation and metal protection
Project overview
Outside Yankee Stadium in New York stands a distinctive 42-metre-high structure designed to resemble a Louisville Slugger baseball bat.
Originally installed in 1975, the structure served as a chimney for the stadium's heating system. Following the demolition of the original stadium, it was relocated to the entrance of the new venue, where it became a recognisable landmark for baseball fans.
Constructed from galvanised steel, the structure had previously been painted using lead-containing coatings, creating a particular challenge when refurbishment became necessary.
The challenge
The project required a solution that would protect the existing steelwork without creating unnecessary risks associated with removing old lead-based paint.
Traditional abrasive preparation could potentially release hazardous lead-containing dust into the surrounding environment.
Given the structure's location at a busy public venue, the renovation required a method that would minimise disturbance while delivering a durable protective finish.
The coating solution
RD-Elastometal was selected for the refurbishment.
The coating is a single-component, water-based elastomeric system designed to provide corrosion protection and waterproofing for suitable metal substrates.
Importantly, RD-Elastometal has been tested against ASTM E1795, a standard relating to liquid coating products used for encapsulating lead-based paint.
Rather than removing all existing paint, the project used two coats of RD-Elastometal to encapsulate the properly adhering existing coating.
This approach helped avoid the risks associated with disturbing the lead-containing material while providing renewed protection to the metal structure.
The project outcome
The renovation demonstrated how a specialist protective coating could provide an alternative to complete removal of an existing lead-containing paint system.
By encapsulating the original coating, the project avoided unnecessary disturbance of the hazardous material while renewing protection for the landmark structure.
The use of a water-based coating also reduced concerns about solvent compatibility with the existing paint layers.
Why this project matters
Refurbishment projects don't always involve straightforward surfaces.
Historic buildings, architectural features and older industrial structures can contain existing coatings that require specialist treatment.
This project highlights the importance of selecting a system that considers both the substrate and the practical challenges of carrying out the work.
