Project overview

The North Bund HiTime Mansion development in Shanghai required a high-performance coating system for its structural steel.

The project was located close to the Huangpu River, creating a particularly demanding environment for the building's steelwork.

The project required all of these characteristics within a single specification for the structural steel.

The coating solution

PPG Steelguard 951 was selected.

The flexible epoxy intumescent coating provides passive fire protection while also being designed for corrosion protection and architectural applications.

PPG states that Steelguard 951 can provide up to three hours of cellulosic fire protection and is designed to fulfil ISO 12944 C5 requirements.

The result

The system allowed the project to combine passive fire protection, corrosion resistance and an aesthetically suitable finish for the high-end development.

Why this matters

Exposed structural steel increasingly has to perform several jobs at once.

The coating needs to protect the steel from corrosion, provide the required fire performance and still look appropriate within the finished building.
