Protecting a Modern Bridge in Norway
Småpudden Bridge is a striking pedestrian and cycle bridge in Bergen, Norway, connecting the city's Møhlenpris and Marineholmen areas.
With its distinctive modern design and exposed steel structure, the bridge needed more than an attractive finish. Its location meant the steel also required reliable long-term protection against the elements.
The Challenge
Bridges are constantly exposed to changing weather conditions, moisture and environmental pollutants. For a steel structure, effective corrosion protection is essential to maintaining its appearance and extending its service life.
The coating system also needed to deliver a high-quality finish suitable for a prominent architectural structure.
The Solution
Jotun's Jotamastic 90 and Hardtop AX were selected as the protective coating system.
Jotamastic 90 provided the corrosion protection required for the steel structure, while Hardtop AX was used as the durable polyurethane topcoat.
Hardtop AX is designed to provide a robust finish with excellent colour and gloss retention, making it particularly suitable for projects where long-term appearance is just as important as protection.
The Result
The completed coating system combined long-term steel protection with a high-quality architectural finish, helping the Småpudden Bridge maintain its distinctive appearance while protecting the underlying structure.
It's a great example of how modern industrial coatings can combine corrosion protection, durability and aesthetics on high-profile infrastructure.
