The Shard, London, With Sherwin-Williams

The Shard - Tours and Activities | Expedia

Project

Standing 310 metres above London, The Shard is one of Europe's most recognisable skyscrapers. With more than 12,500 tonnes of structural steel, the project required coating systems capable of delivering long-term corrosion protection while also meeting stringent fire safety requirements.

Sherwin-Williams worked alongside the steel fabricator, structural engineer and main contractor to develop a coating specification that improved construction efficiency without compromising performance.

Coating System

Sherwin-Williams Macropoxy™, Acrolon™ & FIRETEX®

The specification combined anti-corrosion coatings with intumescent fire protection, allowing much of the coating work to be completed off-site before installation.

Why It Was Chosen

  • 20-year corrosion protection
  • Up to 120 minutes fire protection
  • Factory application reduced on-site programme time
  • High-quality architectural finish
  • Proven long-term durability

Project Outcome

By completing much of the coating process before the steel arrived on site, the construction programme was shortened while maintaining excellent quality control. Today, The Shard remains protected by Sherwin-Williams' corrosion and passive fire protection systems.
